Schreiber Beach open for the season

With temperatures on the rise and sunny days ahead, Parks Canada and the Township of Schreiber have announced the opening of Ibester Drive, which provides road access to the beach and the Casque Isle Trail.

SCHREIBER — Snow be darned, it’s about time to get those bathing suits on.

No, this is not a reference to the polar plunge – the Schreiber Beach is now officially open for the spring/summer season.

The township of Schreiber posted a notice on their Facebook page announcing that Ibester Drive – the road leading to the beach – is also open, allowing direct access for locals and tourists alike.

If you take a drive or a hike to the Schreiber Beach, don’t forget to explore the Casque Isle Trail and bask in the sun by taking a seat in one of Schreiber’s iconic Red Chairs; or, explore the Schreiber Channel to discover “North America’s most diverse, best preserved and internationally known collection of micro-fossils within Precambrian rock,” according to Schreiber’s website.

Speaking to Dougall Media, Mayor Kevin Mullins expressed his excitement for residents and travellers as he also noted that Ibester Drive itself is a regularly beaten path during the clearer seasons.

“People can get down there and access the Red Chairs and just enjoy fishing and whatnot. Actually, a lot of people will walk that road . . . it’s good for the community,” Mullins said.

He further elaborated that having road access adds an element of safety to exploring the shoreline.

In terms of his own leisure time, Mullins said he’s already taken a couple drives down the road and spotted wildlife such as partridges and moose.

Now that the beach is open it seems the summer season is well on the horizon, meaning the time is near to get out and enjoy the beauty of Northern Ontario.
