SCHREIBER – Schreiber’s Winter Carnival is back in full form after being scaled back last year due to the ongoing pandemic.
This year’s Winter Carnival runs from Feb.23 to 26 and Recreation Programmer with the Township of Schreiber, Beth-Ann McKay, said that the team is excited to get back to a more traditional Winter Carnival to bring the community back together.
“For the last 34 years we've held our Winter carnival on the last weekend of February, and it just causes all the communities around us to get together and get off the couch and to enjoy the festivities outdoors, even though it can be sometimes cold, but I think, luckily this year we're having some warmer mild temperatures,
“It involves community organizations, user groups that are in our communities, so they get them out fundraising, gets them out with the community and provide public events for them to attend.”
McKay said that one of the most popular events is the corporate Pictionary, which is held on Saturday but her favourite events come the next day.
“On the Sunday, which is my favourite day, is Spud’s Snow Day, which is going to be a bunch of outdoor activities for the kids and just right next to that is a bunch of indoor activities for adults to enjoy so you know, adults can come out to the penny auction and luncheon,” she said.
“And then the kids can go outside and play and slide, and we have slingshot snowball fights with targets and stuff like that and Spud the Potato will be there and three lane race sliding tubes and things like that.”
2022’s Winter Carnival had to be scaled back due to the COVID-19 pandemic and McKay said that she recognizes that there could still be some nervousness with the whole community coming together but the community is excited to be together again.
“The great thing is, it's outdoors, and they've gotten a lot of good feedback from the communities that people are ready to experience the old ways of where everything was just the same with all our traditions and getting together and all being inclusive and getting to see friends, families, fellow businesses, and other organizations all together again after a long two and a half years,” she said.
