SUDBURY— Science North is helping residents understand how PCR tests and rapid antigen tests work.

Science North recognizes that there are still many questions regarding how COVID testing, works. With the Canadian Government still requiring the use of the Rapid Antigen Test, and with the Ford government recently announcing that they will be providing Ontarians, access to free antigen test kits, Science North’s explanation about how these tests work, is invaluable.

The general public may still be wondering “What’s the science behind PCR tests and rapid antigen tests?” Everyone is talking about COVID tests - PCR, rapid antigen. Here's the science behind how COVID tests work.

Science North explains that Polymerase Chain Reaction test is a technique for amplifying a specifically identified segment of viral genetic material. The test is very sensitive and accurate and can detect the virus past its contagious period.

Rapid Antigen Tests, are specific to protein fragments but not as sensitive. The results of this test occur within 15 minutes and can be done at home.
