MARATHON – Ontario Provincial Police are warning motorists in the Marathon area to be aware of potential traffic slowdowns on Highway 17, between Marathon and White River.

While OPP have not indicated why the slowdowns may occur, the advisory is related to peaceful protests by members of Pic Mobert First Nation, opposed to legislation at the federal and provincial levels, most notably Canada’s Bill C-5 and Ontario’s contentious Bill 5.

Bill C-5 has drawn opposition from First Nations groups who are concerned it fast-tracks resource development and projects of national interest. Indigenous leaders worry it may also fast-track the consultation process with impacted First Nations communities.

Bill 5 is equally contentious, for many of the same reasons.

Pic Mobert First Nation, in a post to Facebook, indicated its membership plans to protest the legislation throughout the week, meaning motorists travelling on Highway 17 in the area can expect potential slowdowns all week long.

The OPP, in a release issued on Monday, said its goal is to maintain the safe flow of traffic, and when delays occur, restore it in the safest manner possible.

Motorists are advised to check in advance for road advisory conditions and to monitor local media for the latest updates.
