SUPERIOR NORTH -- Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for parts of the region.

The government weather agency says conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms Monday afternoon that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts of up to 90 kilometres an hour and nickel seized hail.

Large hail can damage property and cause injury. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles.

Water-related activities may be unsafe due to violent and sudden gusts of wind over bodies of water.

Environment Canada urges residents to be prepared for severe weather. Take cover immediately, if threatening weather approaches. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors.

Severe thunderstorm watch in effect for:

  • Manitouwadge - Hornepayne
  • Nakina - Aroland - Pagwa
  • Fraserdale - Pledger Lake
  • Kapuskasing - Hearst - Smooth Rock Falls
