TERRACE BAY — Superior Greenstone District School Board is celebrating their Early Years Experiential Learning Initiative.
This initiative was demonstrated by the House-Building Challenge adopted by their Early Years students.
The project was a month-long endeavour, during which students used inquiry and play to explore the skilled trades involved in building a house. Their efforts were recently celebrated by SGDSB.
Students shared snapshots of their experience as they took the school community through the planning and creation of blueprints, to the final stages of their build. Students spoke about the key components, that helped make this project such an amazing success.
SGDSB shared how students identified teamwork, design, creativity, numeracy, and problem-solving as key factors needed to help them reach their end goal. Experiments were performed to determine the best materials, and several special guests were on hand to talk about and support the use of specialty tool necessary to build their houses.
One special guest, ironworker, welder and apprentice boilermaker, owner of Work Boot Careers, Jamie McMillan, was on hand to celebrate the learning through this experiential learning opportunity. It was agreed that creativity and innovation of houses, houseboats, and hunting shelters were equipped with doors, moving windows, screens, mailboxes, solar panels, safety features and gardens; all of which helped to make their houses extremely realistic.
SGDSB proudly congratulated these students. Their efforts continue to highlight and promote the importance of the integration of skill trades learning skills in their curriculum.
