SGDSB Grade nine students to get first-hand experience in the workplace

Like many grade nine students across Canada, Superior-Greenstone grade nine students will be gaining first hand experience at a workplace in early November.

TERRACE BAY—Superior-Greenstone District School Board, (SGDSB) is having its yearly Take Your Kids to Work Day, on Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2022. The theme for this year is "You Belong Here".

This program has been in place since the mid 1990’s and has been an initiative introduced by the Ontario Ministry of Education as part of the grade 9 curriculum.

One of its primary goals is to provide students early on in their high school education an opportunity to spend a day in a work place that may be of interest to them in order to determine not only what career path they hope to take, but to also experience the importance of learning daily skills, training and education required in a specific work environment.

SGDSB posted a notice to inform its school community, parents, guardians and caregivers that their grade 9 students will be given the opportunity to participate in Take Your Kid to Work Day, this Nov. 2.

Their notice outlined that “Students across Canada will be spending the day in the workforce with their parents, guardians, or other members of the community to gain a better understanding of what it means to go to work. Our schools are committed to making this day a valuable experience for our students by showing them how important skills, training, and education are to their success.”

Parents, guardians and caregivers were asked that “If your child will be taking part in “Take Our Kids to Work Day”, to please complete the consent form which will be sent home with their student(s) by this Wednesday and to return it to the school by Friday, October 28th.”

However, should their child be unable to take part in this program, SGDSB informed families that there will be alternative activities planned by their school to support similar learning about worksites, job readiness skills and potential career pathways.
