SGDSB wants you to keep your identity under wraps

October is “Cyber awareness month” and Superior-Greenstone District School Board, (SGDSB) wants its school community to protect their personal information.

TERRACE BAY—Superior-Greenstone District School Board made its school community aware that October is “Cyber Awareness Month”.

During the month of October, the focus is on protecting your personal information, and being cautious of what information you share online.

In a recent Facebook post SGDSB shared the fact that in their view point parents and guardians have always taught their children that, “sharing is caring”. However, that doesn’t apply to sharing personal information online.

Instead, SGDSB encourages their students in particular to “practice the opposite”. One needs to be cautious especially when providing information online.

According to SGDSB, “Providing your personal information over social media freely enables strangers access to everything about you.” The Board used figurative language, a simile, to compare strangers looking to tap into your personal information to “pirates looking for buried treasure-don’t give them the map”.

For SGDSB K-12 schools participating in “Cyber Awareness Month” students are being asked to remember to “keep your identity under wraps”.

Cyber Security Awareness Month, runs from Oct.3-Oct.31, and the Canadian government acknowledged it as well by sharing the theme for this year, “Fight phishing: ruin a cyber criminal’s day”. The government encourages Canadians to protect themselves and their personal information from phishing.
