Update, 11:30 a.m.

Original story:

One person is in hospital after a shooting on Sixth Avenue this morning.

A heavy police presence is expected in a couple of areas for the police investigation and some schools are closed as a precautionary measure, says Timmins Police in a news release.

It all started around 6:30 a.m. today (May 7) when Timmins Police responded to a weapons incident on Sixth Avenue.

One male was shot and taken to hospital. His status is not known at this time, said police in a news release.

Shortly after the original call, there was a crash in the Maple North and Seventh Avenue area, which police believe is related to the shooting.

"The area around Sixth Avenue will be under police control for an undetermined amount of time while the investigation continues. The Timmins Police requests that persons avoid this area and take an alternate route. Due to the proximity of the incident, schools in the area have been temporarily shut down as a precautionary measure," reads the news release.

A wide area around the Sixth Avenue scene has been contained by police, the Timmins Police Emergency Response Team has been deployed and the OPP K-9 Unit is helping as well.

The schools closed for the day are Pope Francis Elementary and Jacques Cartier.

More information will be shared when available.

The Sixth Avenue area has been active for police investigations in the last six months.

In March, two people were charged after a shooting in the area of Sixth Avenue and Cedar Street North.

In January, police issued an advisory about a heavy police presence in that area of town. In that incident, a man was arrested at the scene and a firearm was seized, though no further details were released.

In September 2023, two people were injured in a shooting and a man was charged with attempted murder.

Anyone with information on today's incident is asked to call 705-264-1201. To remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
