Smoky conditions to persist throughout day

MARATHON – A special air-quality statement remains in place for much of Northwestern Ontario.

Environment Canada updated its air-quality alert on Monday morning, saying smoke from wildfires throughout the region and other parts of the country has brought smoke to the area. It’s expected to cause poor air quality and reduced visibility.

The smoke is being blamed on westerly winds and the poor conditions could last throughout Monday, and in some cases, into Tuesday.

The government weather agency advises the public to limit time outdoors and to consider rescheduling outdoor sports, activities and events.

Those most likely to be affected most include older persons, children and infants and those with existing illness or chronic health conditions.

The alert stretches across Northwestern Ontario and includes communities as far west as Kenora and Grassy Narrows First Nation, and to White River and beyond in the east. It also includes Thunder Bay.
