Snowmobile safety encouraged during milder winter

Snowmobile Safety Week in Ontario starts on Saturday

Provincial police and the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs are urging people to be cautious and use common sense during the riding season.

The two organizations issued a media release, ahead of the start of Snowmobile Safety Week in Ontario, warning that the late onset of cold temperatures and lack of snow in some parts of the province could cause dangerous conditions.

Police said nearly 40 per cent of snowmobile fatalities investigated by the OPP have happened on frozen lakes and rivers over the last 10 years. Riders are also warned that they can be their own worst enemy, when it comes to speeding or impairment.

Snowmobilers are urged to stay off all Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs trails that are not open, and that people can check for trail status updates online

Snowmobile Safety Week begins on Saturday and runs through Jan. 22.
