Students learn about the importance of mental health

Superior North Catholic District School Board celebrated mental health week with their school community and students exemplified its importance.

MANITOUWADGE--Mental health and the importance of providing needed mental health care and services continues to be a key focus of local and provincial government, as well as school boards in the province of Ontario.

Students in Grades 1 and 2 at Holy Savior Catholic School participated in a poster challenge led by their teachers that reflected a key Superior North Catholic District School Board initiative.

It was the board’s Mental Health Week, and during that time all schools implemented and taught key concepts related to the importance of mental health.

The Grade 1 and 2 students at Holy Savior Catholic, created posters to express what mental health meant to them. It aimed to encourage them to work together and remove the negative stigma that mental health is a bad thing.

The messages on their posters were clear and reflected the concepts, underlying the board’s Mental Health week themes.

Posters designed by these students shared messages such as: “resting, staying hydrated, dancing;” “take care of yourself;” and “compliment a friend.”

Mental Health Week activities emulated the board theme, “Mental health week is all about empathy.”

Overall the messages that came from the children in this class demonstrated that learning about the importance of mental health and sharing how each and everyone can help each other, can never start too early in life.
