MARATHON — The Superior-Greenstone District School Board has renewed their education service agreement with Red Rock Indian Band.

Previously known as a tuition agreement, the education service agreement is a binding document that details the services, supports, and programs First Nations students will receive while attending a public school.

“These agreements really spell out the relationship and the partnership between the school board and the First Nations,” said board education director Nicole Morden-Cormier.

The agreements are tools to ensure that school boards are providing students with equity and cultural safety, access to student data, ensuring education service standards, and requiring school boards to provide First Nations language and culture courses.

Morden-Cormier said the agreement applies to both elementary and secondary students.

Morden-Cormier said the school board is currently negotiating with the 12 First Nations communities in their district and they hope to have three additional agreements signed by the end of the year.
