TERRACE BAY—SNCDSB’s director of education shared her 2020-2021 annual report with her school community.
In it, Maria Vasinelli highlights the successes of the implementation of their strategic plan and the ability for their schools to face the challenges of COVID-19.
She emphasized the importance for all students to return to a stable, caring, safe environment in order to minimize the stress of feeling that they had to “catch up”.
Rather she spoke of how they welcomed every child back to remote learning, by moving forward, forward using the skills gained during remote learning to our students’ advantage while keeping in mind that every child came back with different academic needs.”
Vasinelli highlighted the key focus’ of their Multi-Year Strategic Plan:
- the use of technology as a tool for teaching and learning
- their equitable approach to teaching that reflects their commitment to a student first stance
- the use of flexibility and adaptability when helping students meet their challenges
As part of her annual report Vasinelli the priority of Indigenous education as a result of the high enrollment of Indigenous students and the Board’s stance on justice.
She spoke about the importance of, “Cultural awareness and appreciation of Indigenous culture and addressing calls to action such as, purposeful and sustained integration of Indigenous history and perspectives and supporting native language programming are reflected in our curriculum opportunities and professional development.”
The Director ended her report by mentioning future goals that include their continuous focus on innovation and technology as they use creative methodologies to keep their students engaged while learning and maintaining their Indigenous partnerships in order to create long lasting relationships.
