The Municipality of Shuniah and The City of Thunder Bay have created a Letter of Intent to construct a new ambulance base at 1801 Lakeshore Drive in Shuniah, Ontario.

SHUNIAH – The proposed facility, used by Superior North EMS, will have two drive-through ambulance bays, allowing for safe and easy movement of vehicles, along with new facilities for paramedics while on duty.

“They’ve been living in an inadequate building for a long time. If you take a ride out there, there is a single trailer with insufficient heat and many challenges to that building. We welcome a new facility in the municipality so that EMS workers have a safe, warm place to spend their off time while waiting for calls, said Wendy Landry, Mayor of Shuniah.

The current base, located at Fire Hall #1 at 1700 Lakeshore Drive in Shuniah, does not meet regulatory and functional requirements for a current EMS service.

This paramedic base is recommended for replacement as part of the current Superior North Emergency Medical Services Master Plan. The proposed base would be constructed and owned by the Municipality of Shuniah and leased back to the City of Thunder Bay.

Superior North Emergency Medical Services is a division of Thunder Bay, providing ambulance service to the District and City of Thunder Bay. The base in Shuniah services the Municipality of Shuniah, Township of Dorion, and several unincorporated areas.
