Terrace Bay’s 75th anniversary shows off municipality's growth and prosperity

The Municipality of Terrace Bay is ready and excited to kick off their 75th anniversary celebrations beginning Aug. 18, 2022.

TERRACE BAY—The Municipality of Terrace Bay, has their 75th Anniversary committee and city staff, to thank for what is promised to be four days of celebration, family based fun activities and the official grand opening of their new Terrace Bay Beach Pavilion.

The 75th anniversary celebrations are scheduled to kick off on Thursday, Aug. 18, 2022, with their “Welcome Day”.

According to Luke Bedard, community development supervisor, for the municipality, the theme of these celebrations is “Commemorating The Past and Celebrating The Future”.

This event is focused on instilling a sense of pride in commemorating moments past and present while celebrating the future as a community.

The 75th Anniversary committee has been working diligently throughout the COVID-19 pandemic to organize celebratory events. They invite all past and present residents and visitors to join them Aug. 18, to Aug. 21, 2022 for the opportunity to revisit Terrace Bay and see old friends, while making new ones.

The Mayor of Terrace Bay, Jody Davis took the time to reflect on the hard work his council, staff and committee has been doing to make this event happen. “I want to express my appreciation for the hard work by the anniversary committee, and staff for working so hard through the COVID-19 pandemic to organize this event,” said Davis.

The mayor shared how he is so proud of what the municipality has been able to achieve over the past 25 years, and began a candid talk about this event by inviting everyone to come back to Terrace Bay and see these amazing achievements. “I want to welcome all former residents back to Terrace Bay and their families and guests. I want to show them how much Terrace Bay has grown and prospered over the past 25 years,” stated Davis. “They will notice a great change with the revitalization of the downtown core."

Davis described some of the key changes that have occurred in the downtown core, including the new Library and Senior Centre. “We created a new Cultural Centre out of an old separate school which is now the location of our new Library and Senior Centre,” said Davis. We also completed the water front development with the new Beach Pavilion, and have upgraded our infrastructure for Terrace Bay."

Luke Bedard, community development supervisor outlined the four days of celebratory events. Thursday, Aug. 18, is “Welcome Day”, which includes a dance in the evening with the theme, “Retro Night”.

The dance is being held at Michael King Hall and participants are encouraged to dress up in the theme of 1947, which is the year when the town of Terrace Bay was first founded. Bedard described how that day will feature key dignitaries such as Davis and city council members, along with the Honourable Minister Patty Hadju, and NDP Thunder Bay Superior North, Lise Vaurgeois.  They will all be present for the opening ceremonies scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 19.

Friday, Aug. 19, will also focus on what Bedard described. “There is an expansion of the Annual Light House Festival,” which is being held at Simcoe Plaza downtown Terrace Bay. “There will be activities for all ages including organizations and groups such as Superior Science, inflatable castles, a local artisan market and beer gardens,” shared Bedard.

The celebration of Terrace Bay’s Beach pavilion is scheduled to take place Saturday, Aug. 20, which according to Bedard will feature boat tours, and an open "MIC" opportunities with Friday and Saturday featuring live bands.

Bedard spoke proudly about the new Terrace Bay Beach Pavilion and how both mayor and council and some key stake holders will be present on the day of its grand opening. “On Aug. 21 we are having an outdoor service and our closing ceremonies, as well as the grand opening of the Terrace Bay Pavilion,” shared Bedard.

Another exciting component that day will be the burying of their “Time Capsule" which they plan on opening on the municipality’s 100th anniversary. “This has been a great opportunity for residents to come back and connect with their home town and with friends they haven’t seen in awhile,” added Bedard. Our staff, council, and 75th anniversary committee has worked hard to make this a memorable event,” stated Bedard.

There is no doubt a high degree of pride that the entire community is feeling about these upcoming celebrations.

A huge focus for Davis and city council has been the great strides made in the downtown core and with infrastructure for Terrace Bay. “I invite everyone to come down and take a look at the good things from the past and enjoy themselves. It is a great time to meet and greet and renew relationships and friendships,” said Davis.

“It is a time to spread the good news about how Terrace Bay has grown and prospered.  I invite everyone to come down and have a good time, renewing relationships,” added Davis.

The 75th anniversary celebrations are set to go and offer an opportunity for reflection, renewal and revisiting the past.
