OTTAWA -- A jam-packed schedule had Shuniah’s mayor running from meeting to meeting at this year’s Association of Municipalities of Ontario Conference in Ottawa.

Shuniah mayor and Northwestern Ontario Municipal Association president Wendy Landry had a few meetings over the past few days, starting with a couple of sessions with the Minister of Seniors and the Minister of Education.

“NOMA and Shuniah had quite a few meetings with the Minister of Seniors to talk about the opportunity that could be available for potentially looking at building a seniors home in the Municipality of Shuniah,” Landry said in an interview with CFNO.

Landry added priority topics were discussed during the multi-minister meeting.

“We were talking about crown lands and the opportunity to build and expand and building housing within our municipalities and the availability of lands which are in the municipal proper,” she said.

The topic of railroads and railway crossing was a focal point of a multi minister meeting, as well.

There were key discussions about taxation.

“We also talked about railway taxation,” Landry said. “We had a great discussion in regard to what opportunities are there in looking at, you know, the way that other provinces tax railways in the provinces, so great conversation there.”

The topic of invoices municipalities receive for work being done on local railway crossings was another discussion.

Landry said the high cost of invoices is a concern for municipalities.

The AMO conference wrapped up on Wednesday, Aug. 17.
