SCHREIBER — It’s time to pick up those paint brushes again, Schreiber.
The Schreiber Senior Centre is hosting A Painting Experience with Canadian Artist Tracy Barry on May 12 – Mother’s Day – at the Schreiber Recreation Centre.
The event starts at 12:00 p.m. and is free for Senior Centre members to attend.
Cathy Carlino, coordinator and programmer for the Schreiber Senior Centre, said this will be the third time Barry has put on a workshop with them and that they’ve been “a lot of fun” so far.
“She has a prototype set up and we have some refreshments set up as well so our seniors can have a bit of a lunch while they’re there – and it’s just a really feel good afternoon.
“I’m always looking for new program ideas. Tracy is from our community so she’s a local artist and I’ve known her pretty much her whole life,” she said.
Carlino said the event was made possible thanks to funding from the Seniors Active Living Centre program.
“Being able to get the funding to provide the program makes it accessible to everyone,” she said.
Barry – who used to own and operate The Nest Studio in Thunder Bay before closing up shop in 2021 – is a multifaceted artist specializing, as her website states, “in creating paintings showcasing the beauty of Great Lake Superior and its shores.”
She also leads art workshops in Rossport during a Summer Arts Retreat, welcoming artists and aspiring artists of all skill/ability levels.
Similarly, Barry’s painting workshop with the seniors of Schreiber is meant to cater to a wide range of skill sets and older adults.
As Carlino noted, members of the Schreiber Senior Centre range from 60 to about 88 years old.
She also observed those in attendance at Barry’s workshops have mostly been women, hence why they’ve chosen to host this upcoming workshop on Mother’s Day.
“They paint all afternoon while everybody else is cooking for them and, hopefully, they’ll go home to a nice meal,” Carlino said, half-jokingly.

“I’m very pleased that we’re going to be able to have a nice relaxing afternoon and that’s what the people that have already signed up are saying – they’re excited,” Carlino said.
