THUNDER BAY — Two new forest fires in the Northwest Region have brought the total number of fires burning at present time to 39.
The latest fires discovered include Thunder Bay 21, a 0.3 hectare blaze being held and located near Beagle Lake in Wabakimi Provincial Park.
Nipigon 21 is located in Schreiber, and the 0.7 hectare fire is also being held.
Eleven of the 39 fires are listed as being not under control, with six under control, six being held and 16 being observed.
The fire hazard in the region remains predominantly high, with pockets of moderate fire conditions in Kenora, Red Lake, Thunder Bay and Nipigon districts.
Poor air quality in several parts of the Northwest is being reported, partly from local fires and partly from larger fires in western Canada and Quebec.
