THUNDER BAY — A single new wildland fire was confirmed in the Northwest Region by the early evening of Aug. 19.

Thunder Bay 27 (THU027) was reported on the northeast shore of Union Lake, about 17.7 kilometres north of Highway 11. The blaze, initially measured at 0.1 hectares and listed as being held, later grew to 0.3 hectares before being declared out later that evening.

There are 33 active wildland fires burning across the region. Two remain out of control, one is being held, five are under control, and 25 are under observation.

Fire hazard levels across the Northwest Region are mostly low.

However, moderate conditions persist along the Canada–U.S. border between Rainy River and Quetico Provincial Park, extending north to Highway 599.

The Nipigon fire management area in the Far North is also experiencing a moderate hazard level.
