MANITOUWADGE—The Municipality of Manitouwadge faced numerous comments and questions in response to their original post regarding No Daytime Burning.

In their response, the Municipality reiterated their post and reminded residents and the public that no daytime burning whether in town or in the bush is prohibited, except for cooking or warmth, and that this is provincial law.

According to their follow-up response the Municipality stated that, “No day time burning between 9 a.m. until 6 p.m., (except for cooking or warmth) and yes this applies in town and in the bush. This is provincial law.”

Their post continued with an excerpt from the Ontario Government website that mentioned the following Forest Fire Prevention Act.

1. “The Forest Fire Prevention Act, R.S.O. 1990, c. F.24. Ontario law mitigates the dangers of forest fires through the Forest Fire Prevention Act, R.S.O. 1990, c. F.24, which is administered by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry. In addition to setting out rules on where and when people can start fires, the Forest Fire Prevention Act grants broad enforcement powers to conservation officers, police officers and fire wardens in preventing, containing and controlling forest fires.”

2." Every property will require a burning permit. They are free and can be printed from home. Once filled out, bring it to the municipal office for signature from the Fire Chief. We will make a copy."

Completed forms can be dropped off in person from Monday – Thursday 1 p.m. – 4 p.m., or by email to: [email protected] or they may be dropped into the after-hours drop-off box at the township office. If you drop off after hours, you will be required to pick up the final copy once it has been signed.

As a final note on the municipality response, they want to let the community know that, “Having a permit does not let you burn during the day. You will need this free permit to cover yourself in case something happens.

For a timely response from our fire chief or admin, please direct any comments/questions to the fire chief or fire administrative assistant rather than posting questions on social media (important postings and announcements are posted online to keep the public informed).”
