Victim’s father testifies son's death on his mind ‘every waking hour’

Glenn Allen provided emotional testimony in the second-degree murder trial for his son Jesse Allen, sharing details of witnessing him stab his other son, 18-year-old son Wayne Allen

THUNDER BAY — The father of Wayne Allen, who was stabbed to death by his brother, Jesse Allen, said he can never stop thinking about what he saw that January afternoon in his living room.

“Ever since then, that’s all that’s in my mind, every waking hour, what happened to that boy, what happened in that room,” Glenn Allen testified on Friday, the fourth day of the second-degree murder trial for 40-year-old Jesse Allen.

Jesse Allen stabbed his brother Wayne Allen, 18, twice in the chest and has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder.

A visibly emotional Glenn Allen took the jury through what he saw the afternoon of Jan. 30, 2021 in his Flicker Avenue residence in Manitouwadge.

Wayne and Glenn had recently moved into the house on Flicker Avenue after returning from British Columbia where Wayne had graduated high school in 2020. According to Glenn, he and Wayne were doing alright and it “just made Jesse jealous.”

On Jan. 30, 2021, Glenn said Jesse and a friend arrived at his home just before 1 p.m. and sat at the kitchen table with him while Wayne was sitting on the living room couch.

“[Jesse] had the sunglasses on and looked at me through them and he just smiled. He just smiled,” Glenn said.

They were smoking marijuana and after Jesse took a drag from the joint, he put it out in the ashtray and suddenly stood up without speaking and rushed into the living room.

Glenn said he turned around and saw Jesse standing over Wayne and with his hands above his head clasped together, thrust down so hard into Wayne’s chest that it pushed him down into the couch cushion.

“I was dumbfounded. I had gotten up out of my chair when I saw what was going on and I just stopped,” Glenn testified. “I couldn’t fathom it anymore. Jesse throws his hat off and his glasses off and jumps on the couch and folds the knife and throws it and says: ‘how do you like that dad, two birds with one stone.’”

Glenn said he kicked the knife under the couch and was holding Wayne. He then said to Jesse: “’You killed your brother.’ [Jesse] got up from where he was kneeling and he got up over Wayne’s face and said: ‘Wayne’s not dead, Wayne’s not dead.’”

Jesse’s behaviour was described by Glenn as ‘celebrating’ and ‘taunting’ Wayne.

“Is that not taunting? Is that not arrogant?” he said. “He was celebrating the death of his brother. Like come on.”

After yelling in Wayne’s face, Glenn said Jesse went back to kneeling down on the floor and kept repeating the words: ‘ratfink’ and ‘I want my house back.’

Glenn had to pause his testimony at one point but was able to resume. He said that he will stop looking up in Jesse’s direction.

Cross-examination began on Friday and is expected to resume on Monday.
