UPDATED: Highway 17 south of Wawa reopened after washouts

Crews were working to repair damage caused by heavy rain Tuesday

WAWA — A long stretch of the Trans-Canada Highway north of Lake Superior was reopened late Wednesday after being closed for an extended period following heavy rain that created multiple washouts.

Access to both lanes of about 200 kilometres of Highway 17 between Wawa and Highway 552 at Goulais River had been blocked since Tuesday.

Photos posted by Ontario Provincial Police showed extensive damage to the highway as a result of washouts at Jones Landing and Alona Bay.

After crews worked on repairs, OPP reported the road was reopened to traffic.
