Washouts keep Highway 17 closed south of Wawa

Crews are working to repair damage caused by heavy rain Tuesday

WAWA — A long stretch of the Trans-Canada Highway north of Lake Superior remained closed Wednesday morning following heavy rain Tuesday that created multiple washouts.

Ontario 511  reported access to both lanes of about 200 kilometres of Highway 17 between Wawa and Highway 552 at Goulais River was still blocked.

Photos posted by Ontario Provincial Police showed extensive damage to the highway as a result of washouts at Jones Landing and Alona Bay.

Late Tuesday evening, OPP estimated the closure would last for at least 24 hours.

Police said crews were working to repair the damage, and that the highway would reopen when it's deemed to be safe for travel.
