The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry has issued a watershed statement and safety bulletin for a number of Superior North areas due to higher than normal water levels.
The ministry said the statement will be in effect until May 25, and affects areas within the Kenogamisis Lake and Lake Nipgion watersheds, specifically identifying areas in and around the Municipality of Greenstone, as well as north of Terrace Bay, Schreiber and Marathon.
"Boaters are advised to be cautious if travelling on local waterways," the bulletin reads. "Boat traffic during high water conditions can cause damage to shorelines and to shoreline property with vessel wakes."
The ministry said that lower-lying portions of known flood-prone areas may still be impacted to various degrees as lake and river levels are anticipated to remain high for the next several days.
Due to the likelihood that banks and shorelines adjacent to water bodies can be extremely slippery and unstable, the ministry is advising residents and visitors to exercise caution while around bodies of water and to maintain close supervision of children and pets.
The ministry also advised extreme caution when using forest access roads for outdoor activities as they may become seasonally inundated with water, are prone to washouts and may become impassible due to localized flooding.
The ministry said that it is closely monitoring the weather and developing watershed conditions and further updates will be issued as appropriate.
Residents that have been affected by high water and flow conditions in the past are advised by the ministry to continue to take necessary action to protect and secure any vulnerable property in proximity to rivers and lakes and closely monitor developing conditions and regularly check for updated messages.
