WAWA — Fire safety is everyone’s responsibility, and keeping families and homes safe from fire is not just a priority we should have in our homes. The Township of Wawa shared a message from the Ontario Fire Marshall’s Office asking people to avoid smoking in the garage.
Fires do not discriminate according to location, and often we forget that garages are storage places for flammable items such as paint, lawn mower gasoline and other products used around the yard. According to the OFMO, if you have to smoke in the garage, “make sure that it has a working smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm; have a proper container to put out the cigarette.”
By taking these extra important precautions, fires can be prevented from starting. Ultimately, the OFMO encourages smokers to smoke outside, not in the garage; to extinguish cigarettes in large deep ashtrays, and to empty ashes in a large metal container.
