Winter storm warning remains in effect

SUPERIOR NORTH -- A winter storm warning remains in effect for parts of the region

Environment Canada says a strong low pressure system is expected to track over northwestern Ontario bringing heavy and blowing snow Thursday through Friday morning for Geraldton - Manitouwadge - Hornepayne and Fort Hope - Webequie areas.

Total snowfall amounts of up to 25 centimetres are possible with strong wind gusts up to 70 kilometres an hour.

The government weather agency has also issued a special weather statement for Fort Severn and Peawanuck.

This strong low pressure system is expected to bring snow and blowing snow to these areas starting Thursday afternoon and continuing into Friday morning.

Total snowfall amounts of 10 to 15 centimetres are expected, with strong wind gusts up to 80 kilometres an hour.

Motorists in the region should consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve. Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow.

Visibility will be suddenly reduced to near zero at times in heavy snow and blowing snow.
