Shirley was born in January 1928 in Winnipeg to parents Kenneth and Alma Carpenter, and the original family home in Thunder Bay was on the Fort William side on Harkness Street. Harry and Shirley Orok’s family home was for several decades on Victoria Avenue across from the Friendship Gardens. Shirley also was the champion of her family’s long time house camp at Sandy Beach on Lake Superior, where her family resided every summer for many decades and frequented Chippewa Park. Harry and Shirley were married 64 years.

Shirley Orok played piano as a girl and was a lifelong member and supporter of St. Paul’s Anglican Church. She was an expert typist and worked as a legal secretary after graduating from FWCI in Thunder Bay. For the family accounting practice, she was a secretary, receptionist, office manager, bookkeeping assistant, and seasoned stock picker, for several decades. Shirley continued to work and drive daily and travel until her eighties.

Shirley’s hobbies were numerous, including expert knitting, baking (legendary cheese straws), large family meals with her fine china, gardening, bridge, solitaire, family trips to Duluth and Grand Portage.

Arrangements entrusted to Jenkens Funeral Home. Cremation will take place and a memorial service will be held in Thunder Bay in May 2023.

The family would like to thank the professional support staff at her residence at Pioneer Ridge for such wonderful care for their elder for several years.

Donations will be welcome in Shirley Orok’s name to St. Paul’s Anglican Church and The Alzheimer Society.
