John Ahl, 100 years, WWII veteran, passed away peacefully at the Nipigon Memorial Hospital surrounded by loved ones, on Friday, May 23, 2025. John loved God, community and family. He was an honoured Mason for over 70 years, and an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion for 77 years. He was the captain of the John I. Rankin tugboat for many years and became Roads Supervisor for Domtar Woodlands where he worked for over 40 years. Upon retirement, Domtar named the John Ahl Road after him.
John was a council member of the Grace United Church serving many positions. He was a member of the Committee of Adjustments for the Town of Nipigon and President of the Silver Club for many years. John was a decent, kind, generous, good-humoured, hardworking and grateful person.
John built a walking trail near Loftquist Lake to the top of the mountain, which is now part of an official trail system.
John’s wife, Nellie, predeceased him in 2006 at the age of 86. He was a dedicated father to Gord, Jolene and Ronnie, and wonderful grandfather to David (Clare) and Rachel, and great-grandfather to Avery and Madison.

Thank you to the hospital staff who provided kind and professional care in Palliative Care. Thank you to dear friend Ethel Martin who spent many treasured years with John.
A WWII veteran, during and after the war, John appreciated the care given by the Salvation Army and never forgot it. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Salvation Army or to the Nipigon District Memorial Hospital Long Term Care, would be appreciated.
The Celebration of Life Service will be held at the Grace United Church, 166 Fifth St., Nipigon, on August 2, 2025 at 2:00pm.
