Mrs. Margarete Inge Blauth (nee Marx), age 83, passed away peacefully on April 15, 2023 at Southbridge Roseview.

Margarete was born on October 7,1939 in Fiddichow, Germany. She immigrated to Canada September 5, 1960. Residing for a few years in Kirkland Lake before moving and calling Thunder Bay, ON her home. On November 9, 1967 Margarete received her certificate of Canadian Citizenship.

Margarete was strong, resourceful, loving and smart. She singlehandedly raised 2 children, while improving her English, working fulltime and then buying her own home on McGregor Avenue. Margarete worked for 27 years at Sears Canada as head of the audit department, retiring in October 1994.

Margarete cared for and provided well for her children, suiting them up for skiing at Lock Lomond every weekend and often joining in on the fun. She enjoyed parks and picnics and on occasion she would rent a camp on Mackenzie beach where she swam and relaxed with her kids. In spring of 1974 Margarete was excited to take her children to Germany to visit and connect with relatives. She loved her family gatherings and cherished spending time with the grandchildren.

In 1979 Margarete met Josef Litterscheid and they shared many good years together. They enjoyed travelling to Germany many times and getaways to warm destinations during the winter months. Together they spent time on the golf course and would go boating on Lake Superior. They also loved planning annual “Road Parties” for their neighbours on Haugen Road. Margarete and Joe looked forward to dressing in traditional German, Festival outfits and dancing at the Oktoberfest celebrations in Thunder Bay.

Gifted with accounting skills, Margarete was proud of her certificates of appreciation for participating with the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program. She was generous with her time for 7 years at the Herb Carroll Centre and another 3 years at the 55+ Centre on River Street. Margarete appreciated those who have helped her in the past and was thoughtful when it came to giving back. Her famous German Rum Cakes were always a big hit during the Folklore Festival Events.

Margarete will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered by her common law husband, Josef Litterscheid, her son Manuel Blauth, her daughter Manuela (Steve) Wedow, granddaughters Samantha, Shannon, Rikel, grandsons Dylan and Cody, and many nieces and nephews in Germany. She was predeceased by her parents, Erich and Martha Marx, and her siblings, Marriechen, Erich and Inge.

Heartfelt thanks to everyone at Chartwell on Arundel Street, where Margarete and Joe lived together for 4 ½ years. Margarete moved to Southbridge Roseview in December of 2021. We are grateful for the care and compassion provided by the Primrose staff during her stay, thank you so much!

A celebration to honour Margarete Blauth will take place on Saturday, May 27, 2023 from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. in the reception hall of Harbourview Funeral Centre.

Should friends so desire, donations may be made in Margarete’s memory to The Alzheimer Society of Thunder Bay.
