It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the unexpected passing of our loving daughter, sister, granddaughter and aunt, Maureena Nevaeh King, age 11 years, suddenly at home in Kingfisher Lake First Nation, on Wednesday, July 9, 2025.

Maureena, or “Maur” as she was known, was born in Sioux Lookout, Ontario on February 21, 2014 to Chris and Priscilla (nee Mamakwa) King and attended school in her home community. Maureena loved the outdoors, especially fishing, camping and swimming. She was very artistic and loved to draw. Dancing and playing Broomball were other things she truly enjoyed. She loved being with her family spending time together. Maureena was a kind, gentle, friendly and sweet girl. The memories we are left with will always be cherished in our hearts.

Maureena will be deeply missed by her parents, Chris and Priscilla King; brother Deshawn King; sisters Shawnda Mamakwa (Ezekiel Mekanak) and Aaliyah King; nephews Ashton Cutfeet and Keithan Mamakwa; grandparents Timothy and Zipporah Mamakwa, Nettie King and great-grandfather George Suggashie; uncles Rex King, Ryan King (Desire) and Hezekiah King (Sandrina); aunts Pamela Yellowhead (Ezra), Carolee Peters and Kimberly Strang (Cory) as well as many cousins and extended family from Kingfisher Lake and elsewhere.

She was predeceased by her grandfather, Kenneth King; great-grandparents Albert and Ina Mamakwa, Simon and Annie Sakakeep, John George and Aipi King and Martha Suggashie; uncle Waylon Peters and aunt Ursula King.

A Viewing Service for Maureena will be held in Thunder Bay on Thursday, July 17, 2025 from 1:00pm until 3:00pm in the WESTFORT CHAPEL, 420 West Gore Street at James, officiated by The Venerable Deborah Kraft.

Maureena will then be transported back home to Kingfisher Lake First Nation. The Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, July 19, 2025 at 1:00pm, in St. Matthew's Anglican Church, officiated by Rev. Amos Winter. Burial will follow in the Kingfisher Lake New Community Cemetery. A Wake Service will be held in the Church on Friday evening at 7:00pm.
