It is with heavy hearts that I announce the passing of my Daddio Richard Garry Otiquam, age 62 years, resident of Thunder Bay, ON, who passed away peacefully at St. Joseph’s Hospital with his daughter by his side on June 28, 2025 after a short but very courageous battle with lung cancer. Garry was born August 12, 1962 to Pedro and Laura (Desmoulin) Otiquam and raised in Biigtigong Nishnaabeg First Nation.

Dad quickly established himself as the heartbeat of his family, a role he cherished and upheld with every fiber of his being. His unwavering dedication to his loved ones was evident in the strength and comfort he provided them through both celebrations and trials. Dad was a guiding star for his family, shining brightest when the night was darkest, a testament to the courageous spirit he possessed.

Dad’s journey was one of immense courage; he faced adversity with grace, always looking to uplift others, even in his most challenging moments. He embraced life and, in doing so, taught us all how to appreciate the preciousness of every moment.

Dad’s passing leaves a void that cannot be filled, yet the essence of who he was remains a part of all who were privileged to know him. As seasons change and years unfold, Dad’s spirit will continue to be felt in the gentle breeze, the laughter of children, and the quiet moments of reflection when we feel the need for his guidance.

We are all better for having been a part of his story, and we will carry his memory with us always. He will be profoundly missed, but his spirit will forever reside in the hearts of those who loved him.

Dad is survived by his children Duane Hamel (Tabatha), Dayna Smith (Mike), Desiree Thomas, and Destiny Thomas (Peter); his grandchildren Dalton Pineault (Ashley), Danica Pineault and Dawson Hamel; his great grandchildren Brody and Ryan and sister Lillian Christianson along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Dad is predeceased by his parents, his wife Penny Otiquam (LeBar), his partner Krista Taylor, his siblings, William, Clarence, Lloyd, Lorraine, Sarah and his brothers-in-law Ken Olson, Norman Parenteau and Jerry Christianson.

As per Dad’s wishes there will be no service. Dad will be laid to rest in Biigtigong Nishnaabeg First Nation alongside his parents at a later date.

To Evie Pietala NP for all your care and support of dad over the years; Dr. Abugharib, Dr. Ibrahim and all the amazing staff at Thunder Bay Cancer Center; Dr. Migay, Sherri Henderson NP and all the staff from 2S, 2N and 4N at St. Joseph’s Hospital for your exceptional care of dad over the last few months. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

If so desired, in lieu of flowers, donations in his name to the Thunder Bay Regional Cancer Center, Thunder Bay Regional Kidney Dialysis unit, St. Joseph’s Hospital Hospice unit, Thunder Bay District Humane Society or a charity of your choice.

Daddio, my heart is hurting so much without you here.

What I wouldn’t give to have one more fishing adventure

or one more road trip adventure with you.

I love you more than words can ever express.

Enjoy the fishing until we meet again because you know

I’m going to out-fish you when I get there!
