Timothy John Carlson, age 66 years, passed away suddenly in his home in Thunder Bay, Ontario, on Saturday, January 7, 2023.

Tim was born on January 29, 1956 in Port Arthur, Ontario, to his loving parents, May and Lloyd Carlson. He went to school at Jumbo Gardens Elementary and Hammarskjold High.

Tim worked at various places including Reimers Trucking, Great Lakes Pulp and Paper, and was the business owner of NuLustre Carpet Cleaning for a few years. He spent the bulk of his years working for Ontario Power Generation at the Thunder Bay Generating Station where he received recognition for his 30+ years of service.

Tim had many interests over the years: snowmobiling, stock car racing, cross country skiing and sailing, to name a few. He loved to read (Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings were a couple of his favourites), enjoyed both world and local history, and enjoyed watching a wide variety of sports. He was a good handyman and enjoyed building, some woodworking, and welding. He learned to sail as a teenager in cadets and had many sailing adventures through his forties and fifties - long cruises, many race outings (even winning some titles along with his crew in his category). He especially loved to take friends and guests on sightseeing excursions on Lake Superior, around the Thunder Bay Harbour area and Sleeping Giant where he shared his knowledge of the history and local sights.

What brought Tim the most joy, was being a doting “Papa” to his five grandchildren. He never shied away from a shrieking baby and even relished in the task of carrying his grandbabies around to try and calm them or get them to sleep. He spent many hours entertaining his grandkids by playing with, reading to, and teaching them things about their surroundings. In his last years, time spent with his grandkids was his most cherished time and he would often be found spectating at many of their various sporting events.

Tim is survived by his two children, Jeff (Brooke) and Julie (Michael); grandchildren Hannah, Elizabeth, Palmer, Jonas, and Margot; and by Susan, the mother of his children. He is also survived by his sister, Jan (Dave) and brother, Grant (Robin), as well as several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents May and Lloyd.

An informal open-house celebration of Tim’s life will be held on Sunday, January 15, 2023 from 6-8pm at The Urban Abbey, 308 Red River Road in Thunder Bay. Should friends or family so desire, donations made in memory of Tim to the Thunder Bay Humane Society, The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, or the Canadian Mental Health Association would be greatly appreciated.
