Drivers be aware-new amber-red school bus lights warning system in affect

New amber-red school bus lights warning system is finally in effect in Ontario.

Nipigon—Schools like St. Edward Catholic Elementary School, in Nipigon, are posting notices on their Facebook page, to inform families and residents that a new amber-red school bus light warning system is finally taking affect in Ontario.

Their notice offered families a link to a YouTube video that explained this new school bus lighting system.

School buses are now equipped with an updated amber signal lights system on the overhead of the front and rear of the bus.

Flashing overhead amber lights means that the school bus is slowing down and is coming to a stop, preparing to drop off or pick up students.

When the school bus is stopped, flashing overhead red lights will come on, the stop arm is extended and students are or about to approach or leave the school bus.

Motorists must stop in both directions until the red lights stop flashing and the stop arm is deactivated. Failure to do so can result is a fine and demerit points.

Ontario is one of the last provinces to finally adopt this new school bus signal system that helps bring greater understanding to when you must stop for a school bus. This new signal system took affect Sept. 1, 2022.
