Fuel tanks to be removed, upgrades coming to northern marina

Greenstone has budgeted a combined $80,000 to fix up docking facilities at High Hill Harbour and to remove unused fuel tanks.

BEARDMORE — A marina on Lake Nipigon west of Beardmore is scheduled to be fixed up this year.

Greenstone’s municipal budget calls for a combined $80,000 for a pair of projects at High Hill Harbour — removing a number of fuel tanks that are no longer in use, as well as needed rehabilitation of the docks at the site.

“It's a series of repairs from an inspection we had,” Brian Aaltonen, Greenstone’s director of public services told council in August about the work on the docks.

Aaltonen was responding to questions from Beardmore Coun. Claudette Trottier during a discussion about the municipality’s latest quarterly variance report.

“A number of the docks need levelling, a bunch of the floating docks need repairs, there’s quite a few boards to replace that are rotten or broken.”

Trottier said she was pleased to see plans in place for the work to be done.

The marina provides access to Lake Nipigon just south of Poplar Lodge Park. The municipality’s website says High Hill Harbour offers a public boat launch, docking and winter storage areas and a station for pump out services.

It used to offer fuelling services as well, but those were discontinued after a 2023 service delivery review.

With the municipality no longer offering those services there, the tanks are now slated for removal.

Both projects are listed in city staff’s report as about to be put out for tender. Administration said the hope is the work will be done this fall.

In an interview with Newswatch, mayor Jamie McPherson said he echoed the desire to see that quick timeline happen.

“In our part of the world, it can snow any time after Labour Day,” he said. “The goal is to get the work done this year.”

And given High Hill Harbour’s relative isolation, McPherson said it made sense to get multiple projects needed at the site done at once.

“It’s general maintenance, upkeep, for High Hill Harbour that was due and (it’s) the right way to do it because it’s an isolated area,” he said.

“This is one where we looked at, due to the location, you’ve got to get it done, and efficiently.”
