THUNDER BAY — The man charged in the 2022 death of 48-year-old Brian Sagutch in Eabametoong First Nation has been found fit to stand trial.

Ethan Waboose, 22, appeared in a Thunder Bay Courtroom on Thursday, where a judge ruled he is fit to stand trial on the charge of second-degree murder.

Waboose was first charged in December 2022 following an investigation by the Ontario Provincial Police and Nishnawbe Aski Police Service in Eabametoong First Nation.

Sagutch was pronounced dead in the community, and the coroner determined his death was the result of a homicide.

Waboose was arrested and charged with second-degree murder.

A fitness assessment was conducted in early 2024. Based on the findings of the assessment, a judge determined Waboose was fit to stand trial.

A preliminary hearing will be scheduled later this year. His next court appearance is set for early September.
